Gorgodze entered the US Open qualifying first-round matchup with stronger recent hard-court form, winning eight of her last ten matches including multiple victories at the W100 Landisville event on the surface. The 34-year-old Georgian, ranked around 161, showed improved consistency after earlier clay results and arrived with solid momentum on outdoor hard. Kawa, ranked near 129-133, posted a 4-6 record in her prior ten outings and exited the Cincinnati qualifying with a loss while dealing with inconsistent results on hard and clay earlier in the summer. The players had no recent head-to-head, though both veterans have experience on the surface; trader consensus reflected Gorgodze's edge in current form and schedule spot entering the New York hard-court swing.
