Game context

The San Diego Padres enter this three-game series at Petco Park on a 21-7 surge since late July, including a sweep of the Minnesota Twins that has lifted them into the NL wild-card race with a two-game lead over Arizona. Pittsburgh arrives after a three-game sweep by the Dodgers, dropping to 8½ games back of the final wild-card spot with playoff odds below 1 percent. The Padres hold a 40-26 home record and benefit from Fernando Tatis Jr.’s production, while the Pirates (29-37 on the road) have dealt with multiple injuries, including to Ryan O’Hearn and Konnor Griffin. Monday’s probable starters—Braxton Ashcraft for Pittsburgh and Robbie Ray for San Diego—frame a matchup where recent momentum and home-field edge shape trader consensus around the Padres as slight favorites.
