Game context

Pittsburgh Pirates starters Bubba Chandler and the visiting bullpen face Randy Vasquez and a San Diego Padres club aiming to halt a two-game skid at Petco Park. The Pirates, at 65-69 and fourth in the NL Central, enter with a 2-0 series lead after a 3-2 win in 12 innings on August 24 and a 1-0 victory the following night capped by Oneil Cruz’s ninth-inning homer off closer Mason Miller. San Diego sits at 71-62, second in the NL West and inside the NL wild-card picture, but has been hampered by multiple pitching injuries including Lucas Giolito, Joe Musgrove, and Nick Pivetta on the 60-day IL alongside day-to-day concerns for Casey Mize. Pittsburgh’s own absences feature Mitch Keller and several position players, leaving both lineups reliant on available depth for the matinee finale.
